Timaya aka Papichulo has just dropped a studio project labeled ‘Chulo Vibes EP’ after 5 years of wait and expectation from fans and lovers worldwide.
‘Chulo Vibes EP’ consists of nine (9) hot tracks which lasts for 29 minutes which is a collection of afrobeat, dancehall and reggae. The amazing EP sees the collaboration of top African acts like Burnaboy from Nigeria, Alikiba from Tanzania and Machel Montano from Trinidad & Tobago which makes it an album we must not just walk by.
For Timaya, nothing ever happened twice. Seven studio projects and counting, there is always a fresh take on the music. He serves something different every time, and the menu never stays the same as you sit at his table. Each of his project since his 14-year career has been different but purely true to his style down to this new EP, it obviously shows it’s well worth the wait.
You could find Timaya riding his joy on opener ‘Balance’, before turning in a formulaic banger on ‘The Mood’. The blustering ‘Pull Up’ lurks at the third track of this project and Burnaboy pulls off a standard shift on the piece.
On ‘Akuna’, Timaya goes on a reggae beat to narrate a love scene using words like “na you I go marry I swear Akuna kuna”. Going down the EP from ‘Number One’ which features Alikiba, ‘Obrigado’, ‘I Can’t Kill Myself’ to ‘Happy’ which features Machel Montano each track have one message every die-hard fan who has been following his style of music can relate to.
To end the EP, it’s funny to hear how Timaya calls himself stupid on the last track ‘Stoopid’ with words like “I swear am stoopid right now, I don’t know what to say but am stupid right now “. Nevertheless, the song is a good one to go with.
Another reason why this album is important is that it arrives at a time in Nigerian Hip-hop where the conversations have been about the best way for singers to approach music for profitability. His formula works, the music contains dance songs, and most importantly, it sells.
Chulo Vibes may not be a landmark in the Nigerian music scene, but a well crafted project which will further strengthen his legacy on the scene and move Timaya few inches in the process.
